Holiday Feet: What Really Happens to Your Feet on Your Summer Break, And How to Avoid Problems

The summer break is meant for slowing down, long BBQs, beach days, road trips, and barefoot living.

But for your feet, summer is actually one of the toughest seasons of the year.

Here’s what really goes on beneath the surface when the weather heats up, and how you can keep your feet comfortable all holiday long.

1. Barefoot = More Load on Your Heels and Arches

Walking barefoot on hot sand, concrete, or decks feels great, but it also means:

  • more pressure through the heels
  • tighter calves
  • overworked arches
  • more shock each step

This is why many people develop sudden heel pain or arch strain right after summer holidays.

Holiday fix: Stretch your calves daily and slide into supportive sandals or or even better sneakers for longer walks.

2. Sun + Salt + Sand = Extreme Drying

Summer strips moisture fast.

Cracked heels and splitting skin are far more common this time of year, especially after swimming or wearing open-backed sandals.

Holiday fix: Moisturise at night while feet are warm and clean, that’s when the cream absorbs best and it makes your feet feel fabulous.

3. Jandal Friction Causes Blisters

The classic Kiwi jandal is almost always the culprit behind:

  • blisters between the toes
  • sore arches
  • shin or knee pain
  • chafing where the strap rubs

Holiday fix: Alternate shoes, don’t rely on one pair. And break in any new sandals before heading away.

4. Fungal Infections Spread Faster in Summer

Warm, damp environments = the perfect breeding ground.

Public pools, beach showers, and enclosed sandals can lead to:

  • peeling between toes
  • itchy patches
  • white soggy skin
  • cracked skin
  • discoloured nails

Holiday fix: Rinse and dry thoroughly after swimming. Change out of wet sandals quickly. Avoid bare feet in public bathrooms and communal areas.

5. Small Cuts Get Worse, Fast

Coral, shells, hot pavements, and unexpected sharp stones can cause tiny cuts or cracks that quickly sting, swell, or get infected in warm climates.

Holiday fix: Pack a small foot kit, plasters, antiseptic wipes, and a nail file. Takes up no room and stops holiday problems early.

Diabetic Foot

For people living with diabetes

Daily checks are essential.

Summer increases the risk of unnoticed blisters, burns and small cuts, especially if you’re barefoot.
