You Don’t Have to Wait for Something to Go Wrong. Why Diabetic Foot Checks Are Yearly Essentials!

As Diabetes Action Month comes to a close, one message stands out clearly: diabetes doesn’t just affect blood sugar, it affects your feet too.

This year’s theme, “Young People Can Get Diabetes”, has highlighted that diabetes can impact people of any age, from children to grandparents.

And while awareness often focuses on diet and medication, your feet are among the first places where diabetes can quietly cause change.

A Month of Awareness and Action

Throughout November, our team at Norwest Podiatry proudly supported Diabetes Action Month and World Diabetes Day (14th November) through education, screening, and community engagement:

  • Foot screening clinic at The Doctors Huapai, helping identify circulation or sensation changes early.
  • Educational information for local Lions Clubs and community groups, raising awareness about diabetic foot risks and prevention.
  • In-clinic displays and patient resources encouraging everyone with diabetes to schedule their annual check.

It’s been inspiring to see so many people take proactive steps, some booking their first diabetic foot assessment, others bringing a family member along for reassurance.

Prevention Is Always Better Than Treatment

A small blister, patch of dry skin, or unnoticed cut might not seem serious, but for someone with diabetes, these can quickly become major concerns if circulation or nerve sensation is reduced.

That’s why a podiatry foot check is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to protect your long-term mobility.
During your appointment, we check:

  • Circulation (pulses and temperature)
  • Sensation (nerve response and feeling)
  • Skin and nail health
  • Foot shape and pressure points

The aim isn’t just to treat issues, it’s to prevent them before they start.

“You don’t have to wait for something to go wrong, that’s exactly what podiatry care helps prevent.”

Diabetic Foot

Lessons from Diabetes Action Month 2025

The biggest lesson this year?

‘Awareness leads to action, and action protects your foot health and helps you walk with confidence!’

Many people delay foot checks because they “feel fine,” but the reality is that neuropathy and circulation changes often develop silently. Once people have that first foot assessment, they’re surprised at how much they learn about their health, and how easy it is to stay on top of it.

Early detection and education really do save steps.

Keep Moving, Every Step Counts

Diabetes NZ’s “One Million Minutes” campaign also reminded us of something simple yet powerful: movement matters.
Physical activity: even light walking, gardening, or swimming, improves circulation, supports blood-sugar control, and keeps your feet healthy.
You don’t need to log your minutes to benefit; just keep moving daily in ways that feel good for you.
