Active Feet, Healthy Life. Breaking news – our New Satellite Clinic!

Your feet are the quiet achievers of the body, working hard, holding you up, and carrying you through every part of life.

With 26 bones, 33 joints, and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments in each foot (Source: APMA, American Podiatric Medical Association), it’s no surprise that when something goes wrong, you feel it immediately.

Active Feet

Yet, despite how important they are, our feet are often the most overlooked part of our health.

At Norwest Podiatry, we see how small foot issues can quietly limit activity, independence, and confidence, simply because people delay getting them checked. That’s why in 2026, we’re focused not only on helping people care for their feet, but also on making podiatry care easier to access.

From Tuesday 20th January 2026, in addition to our Huapai clinic, we’ll be offering appointments at our new satellite clinic on Tuesdays at Waitākere i-MEDICAL Centre, (Shop 123, Westcity, Waitakere, 7 Catherine St, Henderson, 0612). Giving patients more local options to stay on top of their foot health.

Because when care is easy to access, people are more likely to seek help early, and that makes a real difference to long-term mobility.

Your Feet Reflect Your Overall Health

Your feet can show early signs of changes happening elsewhere in the body.

  • Circulation issues often appear first in your toes and feet, slow healing, cold feet, swelling, or colour changes.
  • Nerve changes (neuropathy) can begin subtly, tingling, numbness, or burning sensations.
  • Joint or muscle imbalances can show up as pain in the heels, arches, or balls of the feet long before they appear elsewhere.

For people with diabetes, autoimmune conditions, or vascular concerns, your feet become even more important to monitor.

Your feet tell a story. Paying attention means catching issues early.

Regular Foot Care Prevents Common Problems

Many foot issues start small, but can grow quickly if ignored.

Common preventable conditions include:

  • Plantar fasciitis (heel pain)
  • Corns and calluses
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Fungal infections
  • Cracked heels
  • Forefoot pain (metatarsalgia)
  • Tendon pain from overuse or poor footwear

These can interfere with walking, sport, work, sleep, and general comfort.

Most of these conditions can be prevented or managed early with consistent foot care and podiatry support.

Looking After Your Feet Helps You Stay Active Longer

Strong, healthy feet = strong, healthy movement.

Your feet affect:

  • posture
  • balance
  • walking style
  • overall joint alignment
  • long-term mobility

When your feet aren’t functioning well, it often leads to knee pain, hip pain, lower back pain, and reduced independence as you age.

Whether you’re chasing fitness goals, parenting, gardening, working on your feet, or planning travel, caring for your feet means you can stay active and pain-free for longer.

Small Daily Habits Make a Big Difference

You don’t need complicated routines.
Five-minute habits can dramatically improve your foot health:

  • Moisturise your heels to prevent splits and cracking
  • Stretch your calves and arches to reduce foot strain
  • Alternate your footwear to avoid pressure in the same spots
  • Wear supportive shoes when walking long distances
  • Rinse and dry well between your toes after swimming or sweating
  • Inspect your feet weekly for changes to nails or skin

Simple care, done consistently, is powerful.

Professional Foot Checks Matter, and Should be Easy to Access

Just like regular visits to the dentist or optometrist, a podiatry check once or twice a year helps:

  • catch issues early
  • assess circulation and nerve health
  • Safely manage hard skin and nails
  • address fungal or nail changes
  • identify biomechanical problems
  • update orthotics if needed

For people with diabetes, autoimmune conditions, or past foot issues, these checks are especially important.
