Supportive podiatry assessment to understand leg pain in growing children and guide healthy movement.

Growing pains describe episodes of leg discomfort that commonly occur in children, usually between the ages of 3 and 12. The pain often affects the calves, shins, thighs, or knees and is most noticeable in the evening or at night.
Despite the name, growing pains are not caused directly by growth itself. They are thought to be linked to muscle fatigue, activity levels, and how a child’s legs absorb load during movement.
In some children, leg pain may also be related to specific conditions such as Osgood–Schlatter knee pain, particularly in active adolescents during growth spurts.
At Norwest Podiatry, we assess leg pain carefully to determine whether it fits the pattern of growing pains or whether another cause should be considered.

They most commonly occur in the evening or at night, not first thing in the morning.
