Overview: International Podiatry Day, recognised on 8 October, is an opportunity to highlight the importance of foot health and the role Podiatrists play in helping people remain mobile, comfortable and active throughout different stages of life.

At Norwest Podiatry, it’s also an opportunity to reflect on the many different reasons people from across our Auckland community come through our doors, and why looking after your feet and lower limbs can make such a difference to everyday life.

International Podiatry Day: Celebrating Foot Health & Podiatry in Auckland

International Podiatry Day was recognised around the world on 8 October, shining a light on the role of Podiatrists and the importance of healthy feet and lower limbs.

For us at Norwest Podiatry, it’s an opportunity to reflect on something we see every day: foot and lower-limb health can have a significant impact on how comfortably people move, work, exercise and participate in everyday life.

Podiatry care is also much broader than many people realise.

Supporting Foot Health Through Different Stages of Life

The reasons people see a Podiatrist can change considerably throughout their lives.

For a child or teenager, it might be heel pain that’s making school, sport or physical activity uncomfortable. For a runner or active adult, it could be persistent shin, heel or lower-leg pain interfering with training.

Someone else may need help with an ingrown toenail, a painful skin or nail condition, footwear or orthotics. For people living with diabetes or other health conditions that place their feet at greater risk, regular foot assessment and preventative care can be particularly important.

As we get older, maintaining comfortable feet and mobility can also help us continue doing the everyday activities we enjoy.

It’s this variety that makes podiatry much broader than simply treating sore feet.

Helping Our Auckland Community Stay Comfortable, Active and on Their Feet

At Norwest Podiatry, we see people from West Auckland and the wider Auckland area for a broad range of foot and lower-limb concerns.

Sometimes Podiatry is about resolving a painful problem. Sometimes it’s about understanding why an issue keeps returning. At other times, it’s about prevention, managing ongoing foot-health needs or helping someone return safely to an activity they enjoy.

The aim isn’t simply to treat a foot. It’s to understand how the problem is affecting the person and develop an appropriate management plan around their individual needs and goals.

The Value of Addressing Foot and Lower-Limb Problems Early

Foot and lower-limb problems can be easy to put off, particularly when they start as a minor niggle.

However, persistent pain, recurring nail or skin problems, changes in sensation, or symptoms that begin to affect walking, footwear, sport, exercise or everyday activities are worth paying attention to.

Early assessment can help identify what may be contributing to the problem and what treatment or management options may be appropriate before it becomes more disruptive.

Whether the concern involves heel or lower-leg pain, an ingrown toenail, ongoing foot-health management or another problem, a Podiatry assessment can help determine the most appropriate next step.

What Does a Podiatrist Actually Do?

It’s a question we’re asked more often than you might think.

Podiatrists assess and manage a wide range of foot and lower-limb conditions: from children’s foot concerns and sports-related problems through to heel and lower-leg pain, ingrown toenails, skin and nail conditions, orthotics and diabetic foot care.

We’ve put together a comprehensive guide explaining the different areas of podiatry, the types of conditions Podiatrists commonly see and when making an appointment may be helpful.

Recognising International Podiatry Day at Norwest

We kept International Podiatry Day fairly simple at Norwest this year. A little acknowledgement in the clinic and an opportunity to celebrate the work Podiatrists do every day.

More importantly, it gave us an opportunity to recognise the patients and wider community we care for.

From children and families to runners, workers, older adults and people managing ongoing health conditions, we’re proud to play a part in helping our community stay comfortable, active and on their feet.

International Podiatry Day may happen once a year, but looking after your foot health matters all year round.

When Should You See a Podiatrist?

You don’t necessarily need to wait until a foot or lower-limb problem becomes severe before seeking advice.

If pain keeps returning, you’re changing the way you walk because something hurts, a nail or skin problem isn’t resolving, or a foot or lower-limb issue is beginning to interfere with your work, exercise or everyday activities, a Podiatry assessment may be worthwhile.

At Norwest Podiatry, we provide Podiatry care for children, adults and older people from Huapai, West Auckland and across the wider Auckland area.
