What is Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA)?

What is Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA)?

At Norwest Podiatry, we offer Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA) surgery as an effective and long term solution for painful ingrown toenails. PNA surgery removes only the ingrown edge of the nail while leaving the rest intact. A medical chemical might be applied to stop regrowth, giving a permanent solution for recurring or severe ingrown toenails.

PNA is performed under local anaesthetic in our West Auckland clinic and can take from 45 – 90 minutes depending on our many nails affected. It’s a walk out procedure with minimal downtime.

When is PNA recommended?

  • Conservative treatments (Onyfix - nail bracing, regular podiatry care) haven’t resolved the issue.
  • Ingrown toenail keeps recurring
  • Severe pain, swelling, or infection present.
  • The ingrown section is causing severe pain or limiting your mobility.
